Sydney O. White, Ph. D
Dr. White has over thirty five (35) years of broadcasting experience in radio and television. Prior to his current consulting position as Management & Project Consultant for One Caribbean Radio, he spent the last seventeen years at National Public Radio, and most recent, at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, serving in various positioned, including Manager, Stations Projects; Manager, Marketing and Station Relations and Manager for New Stations Acquisition and Station Services Consultant.
As Manager for Station Projects, Dr. White designed and managed NPR’s Station Enhancement projects, which include hiring and managing consultants for projects designed to improve member stations’ performance in the crucial areas of revenue and audience growth. He also served as a member of several company-wide teams that define and develop policies for program pricing for stations in the network; focused on station development strategies; stations’ facilities expansion strategies, and on audience/revenue growth strategies.
In addition, Dr. White provided in-house consulting [technical, managerial and organizational] assistance to NPR member stations and to new stations seeking to join the network. This included ensuring that member stations are in compliance with FCC and other federal and state operating guidelines.
Prior to joining NPR in 1993, Dr. White served as broadcast management, programming and planning consultant for the Caribbean Satellite Network, a cable television channel operating out of Miami, Florida.
He has held a variety of management, development (sales and marketing), program development, production, planning and research posts with various broadcast organizations including WDVM-TV (now WUSA), WHMM-TV (now WHUT), the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, WPFW-FM and WONY-FM.
Dr. White holds certification in broadcast management from graduate programs offered by the Michael G. Foster graduate school of business at University of Washington, Seattle, WA and Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, Washington DC. He is a 2006 graduate of the National Association of Broadcasters Leadership and Management intensive training program, a program which focuses on the unique process of assessing, purchasing, owning and operating radio and television stations. The seminars are conducted by CEOs, CFOs, station owners, policy makers, regulators and other senior level broadcasters for aspiring broadcast owners and CEOs.
He holds a BS degree [State University of New York] and graduate degrees (MA) in Mass Communications Research and (Ph.D.) in Telecommunications Policy and Administration [Howard University].
Dr. White is currently a member of the Washington Association Black Journalists [WABJ] and the National Association of Black Journalists [NABJ] and has worked on several policy-focused projects with the Minority Media Telecommunications Council [MMTC].
